East Fish Pier Roof Replacement

The Boston Fish Pier consists of three buildings, all of which were constructed between 1911-1913 and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gale evaluated the existing roof system at the East building and provided an existing conditions report which indicated that the roof, which has moisture infiltration at multiple locations, has reached the end of its service life. The Massachusetts Port Authority (MPA) decided to proceed with roof replacement based on Gale’s assessment. Given that an existing gas line (owned and maintained by National Grid) rests on sleepers several inches above the existing roof covering and provides service for rooftop equipment critical to multiple tenants’ operations, MPA requested Gale assist in applying for a variance, which was approved. The variance will allow the roof system to be replaced in kind with R-17 thermal resistance rather than the current energy code requirement of R-30.
