Masonry Restoration and Window Replacement

Originally constructed in 1917, the historic school was experiencing leaks and deterioration of interior finishes from moisture infiltration through defects in the masonry walls and window systems. The 30-year-old windows were thermally inefficient causing high solar gain on the interior. The unique facade of the building incorporated 1” wide mortar joints as an aesthetic.

Gale’s services included repointing the mortar joints and repairing the damaged stone and brick units, installing new throughwall flashings, rebuilding the masonry parapet to improve structural integrity and mitigate leaks at the top floor, and installing new historic replica thermally broken aluminum windows. Window units were design to replicate the original wood framed double hung style windows. Panning was used to replicate the original brick molds and decorative trim.

The Manchester Historic Association awarded Gale a “Renovation of a Historic Public Building” Award.
